About Captain Russell
Founded in 1998 by Captain Russell Bond, Shademakers NZ Limited was created for the purpose of designing, manufacturing and supplying the world's finest outdoor umbrellas.
Entrepreneur and Perfectionist
A few years before founding Shademakers, Russell identified a worldwide need for superior crafted, elegant and functional outdoor shade solutions. Combining this niche identification with a love of sailing, entrepreneurial skills and a penchant for perfection, he pursued his goal.
His passion for sailing was a strong influence on the design: extruded anodized aluminum masts, stainless steel fittings and marine-grade components and fabrics. With the help of a Kiwi industrial designer and 12 months of sweat and ingenuity, the Sola umbrella was born in 1999 to rave reviews.
In addition to this best-selling residential side post umbrella, the Shademakers product range now includes two commercial sidepost umbrellas, a series of table, market and beach umbrellas, and two highly stylized and robust commercial centrepost umbrellas. A recent addition to the line and a proprietary Shademaker innovation, the Siesta, offers the world's first umbrella canopy that hangs from any overhead structure and can be opened, collapsed or removed in seconds. It's ideal for shading pergolas and gazebos. A number of exciting new designs will be introduced next season and Shademakers innovation potential is as high as never before.
In just a few years, Shademakers has grown to become New Zealand's leading manufacturer of high quality giant-size umbrellas for commercial and residential environments. They've been hailed worldwide for their elegant design and ease of operation and maintenance. This extraordinary line of umbrellas is now exported around the world to more than 25 different countries, including USA, Australia, Mauritius, the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Hong Kong, Egypt, Figi, Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tahiti, Georgia, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico...this list is constantly growing.
The team at Shademakers is always interested talking to professionals around the world who might be interested in bringing this unique design series to their home country. Please contact David Jesze, Managing Director for international project inquiries.
